What face do we show when we think no one is watching? A "Questione di sguardi" is a photographic exploration of the authenticity of the gaze, of the fragile balance between observing and being observed.
Sitting on a bench along the cycle path between Pesaro and Fano, with my camera hidden and connected to my phone, I captured unguarded glances: eyes that turned towards me, unaware that their gaze was being captured through the lens. They thought they were looking at a girl absorbed in her screen, oblivious to their attention, while in reality, I was observing them.
We look at one another every day, but rarely do we truly see each other. When we know we are being watched, we strike poses, wear masks, and construct an image of ourselves. But what happens when we believe we have no audience? Is the gaze of a stranger more authentic than our own reflection?
In this project, the viewer becomes a witness to an asymmetrical exchange of gazes, where the boundary between subject and observer begins to blur. It is a reflection on perception, identity, and the ways in which we exist in the eyes of others.
